Grammy Award nominated and globally renowned a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey In The Rock
We are thrilled to welcome Grammy Award nominated and globally renowned a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey In The Rock as they continue to cultivate, evolve, and add memorable moments to their indelible legacy as activists and artists. They have stayed true to their mission to; educate, entertain, and empower their audience and community through the dynamic vehicles of a cappella singing and American Sign Language interpretation. Earlier this year they released their first album principally comprised of original songs, #LoveInEvolution, which was critically-acclaimed and featured their collective voices and prowess as stunning vocalists and compelling songwriters. Touching on the culturally complex relevance of our times — social justice, human and civil rights — the album also integrated many of the complex sounds of African American musical genres such as; blues, spirituals, traditional gospel hymns, rap, reggae, African chants, hip hop, ancient lullabies, and jazz improvisation which have contributed to Sweet Honey’s core and patented style. They continue to stretch their artistic boundaries as live performers to produce a sound filled with their soulful four-part harmonies and intricate rhythms, which is accompanied by hand percussion instruments and bass (acoustic upright and electric).
This performance and artistic residency is supported in part by the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as Emory & Henry’s Appalachian Center for Civic Innovation. In addition to this concert, Sweet Honey in the Rock will present outreach programs to Washington County elementary students and work with E&H’s Concert Choir and Civic Innovation students.
